Inspiration

Thread Count 11

Many of us are on a constant search for inspiration. It sometimes comes in droves, but when it disappears, it can be hard to find again.

Sometimes we have to step outside of our comfort zone to find things that inspire us.

And with so much of our art being processed thoughtlessly through a fast food assembly line in order to satisfy increasingly shorter attention spans, it’s only getting more difficult to seek out.

I often get asked the same question… “How do you decide which artists you want to work with?”

After producing numerous breakdowns about the exact traits I’m looking for, I was finally able to reduce the answer into one simple tweet…

Inspiration. That’s what I’m looking for. I want to inspire and be inspired. Both are equally important to me.

And while I’ve learned something from every single person I’ve worked with throughout my entire journey in music, not everyone has inspired me.

But now that I’ve put in the work, and have some choice in who I collaborate with, I want to work with creatives who inspire me to be better; whether through their music, storytelling, hard work, creativity, mindset, or even their kindness.

Often when we start out on our career path, our options are limited, so we find ourselves working with anyone in our vicinity who has similar interests. But “interests” are a low barrier of entry. It’s the dedication that comes later, and sets us apart from our old friends who treated our entire life’s purpose as more of a personal hobby.

Eventually, we realize we can’t put everyone on our back and carry them to the promised land.

In fact, it’s rare to find that your first teenage creative/ business partner continues with the same undeniable drive and passion that you possess. And if you’re lucky enough to have found that person, keep doing what y’all do— hopefully forever.

But I’m gonna assume anyone taking the time to subscribe and read these newsletters has a strong work ethic, as well as lofty goals and aspirations. Otherwise, why waste your time?

So, just like I’m doing, I recommend you surround yourself with others who inspire you. Don’t let your imposter syndrome keep you from building with more intelligent and accomplished people. Because it’s boring being the smartest, most successful person in the room, right?
