That One Person

Thread Count 7

Hope you’re all having a great start to the new year!

Whether you're an artist, manager, or anyone who works with a team, you're probably looking to surround yourself with a great mix of talented and effective folks.

People often ask about the difference between working with an independent/ small boutique agency vs. working with a larger agency.

The truth is, the actual company doesn’t matter at all. Hold on, let me explain...

As I was writing, I was starting to give you the pros and cons of signing with a large agency like CAA, WME, UTA— blah blah blah. But to be real, none of that matters. Agents often move between agencies. You can replace one logo with another, or trade one big building with another bustling office space.

Instead I’m going to keep this newsletter brief and highlight one major point…

No matter where you go, you just need ONE person within the organization who truly believes in you, your talents, and your future. And that representative needs to be willing to run through a wall if it’s to your benefit. Trust when I tell you that person will convince everyone else they need to under that roof.

So whether you sign with a major agency, an independent agent like myself, a major publicist, an indie label, or a management powerhouse, the only thing that matters is finding the one person that believes in you and will fight for you. Or better yet, allowing that person to find you.

If you do connect with that rare gem of a person, return the favor by giving them the same loyalty they provide to you. And if they decide to part ways with the company you signed with or that same company lays them off, try your best to roll with them (if contractually allowed). Otherwise you may get trapped somewhere in industry purgatory.

Also, in exchange for all of their hard work and dedication, you should understand the importance of incentivizing each person on your team to work harder on your behalf. Offer them opportunities to close deals that you could have closed yourself. Make introductions to other valuable connections that they can cultivate. Show them you want them to win too.

This is how good teams grow together. They share the credit and the treasure. They big each other up. And they make sure everybody eats.
